Just 16 miles from downtown Portland and across the Sauvie Island Bridge sits a home that feels a world apart.  It is located on one of Sauvie Island’s highest points, off a gently meandering two-lane road, in a neighborhood that is one of the Island’s most desirable. The drive that leads to this special home is lined with ornamental cherry trees that grace the lane with an arcade of color in the spring, summer, and autumn. From its central placement on the property and with several Oregon White Oaks its guardians, the home faithfully overlooks meadow, pasture, forest, and some of the richest farmland in Oregon.

The home, built in 1967 has good bones, quality materials, and walls of windows capturing views of the flora and fauna of this enchanting island retreat.  Custom built and lovingly restored, the home retains its original   architecture and character.  Recent updates, fresh finishes, and quality materials engender a sense of sumptuous serenity, peace, and comfort for all who visit.

The open floor plan is enhanced by vaulted ceilings with exposed beams, wood paneling and a wood-burning fireplace shared with the dining area.

The family sized kitchen was updated in 2016 and features maple cupboards, granite counters, refinished red-and-white oak floors, glass and stainless hood, extra deep under mount sink, subway tile backsplash and stainless appliances.

A cozy and inviting breakfast nook opens to the spacious back deck, overlooking pastoral views and indigenous white oak trees.

Coveted “master on the main” design with walk-in closet and beautifully updated private bath. The 2nd bedroom and 2nd full bath are on the main floor as well. Two more bedrooms upstairs have bamboo floors and vaulted ceilings, one with a balcony ideal for guests or hobby/office/meditation space.

The versatile daylight suite includes a wood-burning fireplace, kitchenette, full bath, and ample space for a variety of uses: an art or music studio, for example, guests, caregiver. It has a private, covered patio and direct access to the grounds, terraces, and upper deck.

Sauvie Island is one of the largest river islands in the United States and unique in the West.  The 1.93 acres of property is bucolic with pastures, a small barn, meadows and flower beds.  The stately Oregon White Oaks stand in tribute to the rich history of this river island.

About Sauvie Island

Originally occupied by Chinook Indians, this river island is approximately the same size and shape as the island of Manhattan. In their journals, Lewis and Clark noted the “high and extremely fertile” nature of the land on this island. Pioneers crossing over the Lewis and Clark Trail from Missouri settled and farmed the extremely rich and fertile island in the 1850’s.

The island is approximately 24,000 acres – about 15 miles long and four miles wide.

The northern 12,000 acres are owned by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and managed as the Sauvie Island Wildlife Area.

The southern half of the island is graced by farmland, including Century Farms, farmers’ markets, and community supported organic agriculture. With flat roadways, it’s easy to enjoy miles of walking, hiking, bicycling, and bird watching.

Quick and easy access to beaches provides opportunities for fishing, boating, and appreciating nature.

“ There are few places on earth where at sunrise you can go on a bald eagle watch and count a dozen bald eagles, paddle midday on a lake whose shores brim with wapato steeped in history, and at sunset travel a half hour into town to partake in Portland’s rich arts and cultural scene.”
