About Sauvie Island

Originally occupied by Chinook Indians, this river island is approximately the same size and shape as the island of Manhattan. In their journals, Lewis and Clark noted the “high and extremely fertile” nature of the land on this island. Pioneers crossing over the Lewis and Clark Trail from Missouri settled and farmed the extremely rich and fertile island in the 1850’s.

The island is approximately 24,000 acres – about 15 miles long and four miles wide.

The northern 12,000 acres are owned by the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and managed as the Sauvie Island Wildlife Area.

The southern half of the island is graced by farmland, including Century Farms, farmers’ markets, and community supported organic agriculture. With flat roadways, it’s easy to enjoy miles of walking, hiking, bicycling, and bird watching.
